Expanding the Reach of Women + Water in India through Collaboration and Adaptation

I4DI is pleased to be part of a winning team for the 2022 USAID CLA Case Competition! As the CLA (Collaboration, Learning, and Adapting) partner to USAID/RFS and GAP Inc. on the Women + Water Global Development Alliance, I4DI played a central role in helping Women + Water fully integrate CLA into strategic planning and implementation.

Women + Water, designed to improve and sustain the health and wellbeing of women and communities touched by the apparel industry in India, empowered women to become change agents for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) management in their communities. A reflection session at the end of the first year showed that the theory of change did not properly address WASH governance issues. Women + Water then engaged a number of stakeholders to determine how to adaptively manage programming, ultimately bringing on a new partner to the consortium. The new partner helped increase community engagement with impressive results. One year later, the number of people empowered to improve their access to drinking water and sanitation through the Alliance increased from just under 70,000 to more than 900,000, and ultimately reached more than 2 million people by the end of the activity.
