I4DI Announces $7.2 Million Global Development Alliance to Improve Farmer Livelihoods and Support a Sustainable, Climate-Resilient Cocoa Industry in Indonesia

The Institute for Development Impact (I4DI), along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Mars Inc., are pleased to announce the launch of a four-year $7.2 million Global Development Alliance to improve farmer livelihoods and enhance evidence-based agroforestry practices in the Indonesian cocoa sector. Through the Advancing Cocoa Agroforestry towards Income, Value, and Environmental Sustainability (ACTIVE) partnership, USAID, Mars, Inc., and I4DI are using their collective resources to address key cocoa supply and deforestation challenges that are negatively affecting farmers in South and Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This Alliance will improve smallholder farmer income and reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions through advancements in application of cocoa agroforestry best practices and creation of a more conducive government policy environment that enables private sector engagement.

As the prime awardee, I4DI will be working closely with Mars Inc. and USAID to implement all aspects of the award and ensure robust adaptive management and results. ACTIVE is another example of I4DI’s innovative sustainable sourcing work across Asia and Africa and is the firm’s second engagement in a Global Development Alliance.
